LFF Review: The Stimming Pool Sees Cinema from Another Perspective

The Stimming Pool is a documentary focused on film making seen through the eyes of those with neurodivergency. A condition where the person experiences and processes information in an atypical way. Shot by filmmakers who each have their own neurodivergence, this condition manifests itself through the work in very specific ways. From an array of animation techniques, through to picture books and split personalities incorporated by the filmmaker during their creative process. Combining visual cues, art installations, and other sensory stimulus that makes The Stimming Pool a truly immersive experience.

Challenging, analytical, and brutally honest in its depiction of life through the camera lenses of these creatives, The Stimming Pool is not for everyone. Scenes are fragmented and fractured, while fly-on-the-wall footage reveals how difficult day to day life can be for these men and women. Seemingly free form in its construction, The Stimming Pool focuses on every sensory method of information available, revealing a world fraught with difficulties. The six creatives including Sam Ahern, Steven Eastwood, and Lucy Walker all approach things in a different way, exploring their unique perspective with consideration and dignity. Looking at this world through the cinematic medium, alongside like minded collaborators, who are invested in joining them on their journey.

Like all the best documentaries, The Stimming Pool works better when those involved switch off and become absorbed in their subject. For audiences that pleasure comes through an understanding and exploration of some intimate that leads to an emotional connection. In this case, that means stripping away the non-essentials and doing away with distractions. To make a conscious choice and meet these film makers halfway on their journey, and truly appreciate their perspective. Ultimately, that is what the London Film Festival advocates on every level in its search for new voices. This desire to embrace inclusivity across the creative spectrum is personified here with The Stimming Pool, where audio visual stimulus meets an audience open to learning something new. Calming, confident, and effortlessly original – put aside a little time and let this documentary work its magic.
